Collard Greens, 1 bunch, Shelter Farm

Collards belong to the cruciferous family of vegetables that also includes broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. These hearty leaves can bit a little bitter raw, so they are best pan-fried or steamed. Just 10 minutes from Port Alberni on 172 acres is Shelter Farm, a social enterprise operated by The Port Alberni Shelter Society (PASS). The farm grows vegetables that help generate income to support their shelter and their low-barrier educational and employment programs. Shelter Farm is the location for the “Farm Worker Fundamentals Program” which is run in partnership between the Port Alberni Shelter Society and North Island College. Students learn about crop management, develop skills in irrigation, weeding, integrated pest management and disease control. Students also develop skills in business management, budgeting and marketing. Shelter Farm is also home to the Therapeutic Recovery Community (TRC), a proven approach for recovery that helps people develop life skills, tackle addiction, re-enter the community and workforce.
