Folks have been asking about stone fruits this year, and as some of you may have already heard, it has been a tough season for Okanagan stone fruit farmers. As a result, we will not be receiving our beloved peaches (and other stone fruits) from the Okanagan this year.
Warmer temperatures brought early spring weather, and buds began to form on the trees. After the unseasonably warm weather, a deep freeze hit our stone fruit growers hard, killing off the active buds on the fruit trees. Because of this extreme weather, Okanagan farmers have lost approximately 90% of their harvest this year, and we are heartbroken about it.
Thankfully, the fruit trees were not permanently damaged and we can look forward to an abundant harvest next year. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right?
While we might not be receiving stone fruits from B.C., we can look forward to fruits coming form other neighbouring regions, like Ontario and Washington. Make sure you're signed up for our weekly newsletter to be in the know about peachy updates!
